Coffee during pregnancy in Switzerland

Coffee is often not cut out during pregnancy but limited (a common guide is around 200 mg caffeine a day, varying by source). Espresso, filter coffee, cola and tea add up. Check serving sizes on Swiss labels. Helvetic Mom explains the drinks label and does not replace a midwife’s advice. Not a diagnosis.

How much coffee is commonly suggested during pregnancy?

The recommendation is a maximum of 200 mg of caffeine per day. That is roughly one large filter coffee or two small espressos. Caffeine is also found in tea, chocolate, cola and energy drinks — count all sources together. Caffeine crosses the placenta, and the baby cannot yet metabolise it as quickly as an adult.

Do cola and tea count towards caffeine?

For alcohol, official guidance recommends avoiding it during pregnancy. Discuss personal questions with your midwife or doctor.

Herbal teas: what to watch out for?

Most everyday herbal teas are fine. Sage in large amounts can stimulate uterine contractions — as a culinary herb in cooking it is fine, but as a tea it is better avoided. Raspberry leaf tea is often recommended only from the third trimester onwards. If in doubt: ask your midwife.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink coffee while pregnant?

Yes, in moderation. Up to 200 mg of caffeine per day is considered often fine — that is roughly 1–2 cups. Decaffeinated coffee is fine at any time.

What about non-alcoholic beer or wine?

Most non-alcoholic beers and wines still contain trace amounts of alcohol (up to 0.5%). The risk is low, but if in doubt, choose another drink.

Is Rivella allowed during pregnancy?

Rivella contains small amounts of caffeine from whey permeates — the occasional sip is fine, but water is the better choice.

How do I find caffeine on a label?

For packaged drinks, check the caffeine statement and serving size.
